Capacity Building

In an effort to achieve one of our core aims, we engage in capacity building initiatives to promote maritime archaeology and coastal cultural heritage stewardship all over the world.

We aim to raise awareness of the richness of the underwater and coastal heritage as well as the threats faced, and the actions that can be taken to mitigate the damage, educate and train officials, developers and students of archaeology and cultural heritage, and to help build capacity to manage, protect and promote maritime culture for future generations.

Below are a few capacity building initiatives that the Society has been or is currently engaged with.

Mazotos Shipwreck 2019

In 2019 we offered the chance on a dive amongst the ancient amphorae of the Mazotos wreck! Visitors dived the wreck, met the team and learnt about the underwater archaeological excavation. Hosted by Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory - MARELab of the Archaeological Research Unit, University Of Cyprus. Thanks to Funding from the Honor Frost Foundation and support of Vasiliko Terminal Services.

In October 2019 we were lucky enough to be help offer the chance to dive amongst the ancient amphorae of the 4th century BC Mazotos wreck in Cyprus.

Visitors were able to dive the wreck, meet the team and learn about the underwater archaeological excavation. Hosted by Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory - MARELab of the Archaeological Research Unit, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων Κύπρου/ Department of Antiquities Cyprus.
